Now with OpenID

OpenID logoSomething you’ll be aware of unless you’ve been living in a cave in Tibet the past few months is that OpenID is gaining massive traction as a unifying force in the identity space. Microsoft, AOL, Technorati and (soon) Digg are on the bandwagon.

Major players like these all getting behind something that isn’t yet a defacto (let alone ratified) standard is big news. OpenID is set to become the definitive player in the easy-to-use, verifiable identity space. For everyday users, and even most technically adept ones, OpenID could become the “one true ID”.

Imagine as this gains traction and implementations, the ever-decreasing need to have separate logins for the many, many sites you use, read or interact with. A rough guess and quick look through my email gives me at least one signup of some for each week in the last year, whether it’s for a site, a mailing list or whatever. OpenID, done right could make that go away.

If you’re not sure about what OpenID is all about, Fred Stutzman at the AOL dev blog has an excellent explanation (via Tara).

I’m in the process of implementing OpenID as an identification system here at acidlabs, so if you’re commenting and have an OpenID, you’ll be able to use it as a verifiable source of identity so that your comments don’t need to pass through the moderation queue.
